Brake Shoes & Drums

Before the advent of disc brakes (and for use on most cars as rear brakes for years after), cars used drum brakes.

As the name suggests, these brakes were enclosed in a 'drum' and consisted of brake shoes which were pushed against the inside of the drum by means of springs and a wheel cylinder. This then slowed the vehicle down.

Many cars although having switched to all round disc brakes, may still use brake shoes to operate the handbrake.
